The future of automated vehicle technology careers.

Ohio has been a leader in testing automated vehicle technologies, particularly focusing on addressing the different changes from driving on rural roads compared to urban roads. DriveOhio’s Rural Automated Driving Systems (ADS) project has been gathering data to enhance AV performance all around.

Funded partly by a $7.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the ADS project tested automated vehicle abilities going through Ohio’s rural environment. The goal was to identify specific challenges they face in hilly and curvy roads, limited sight distances, and roads surrounded by heavy trees.

This industry is growing and offers high-paying, high-quality jobs. Careers in this field include roles like engineering, machine learning specialists, cybersecurity specialists, software developers, and more! As the industry continues to grow, the demand for skilled professionals will only increase.

Programs that introduce students, especially those in rural or underserved areas, to AV technologies can help bridge the gap between education and employer’s needs. Our team has experience helping schools create, build, and expand career readiness programs. For example, EnvisionEdPlus, in collaboration with Trumbull County ESC, created a pre-apprenticeship program that links unmanned aircraft (drones) and entrepreneurship. This new droneproneur program kicked off in six Trumbull County schools last fall. We are also supporting the start up of seven cybersecurity pathways across Ohio in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce and the Governor’s Office. Watch for updates on this new project throughout the year!
